"Eichler Homes: Designed For Better Living"

Joe Eichler’s nearly 11,000 modern, open-plan homes were built in California between 1951 and 1973. With high post-and-beam ceilings, walls of glass and structural designs bringing the outside in, they were the perfect contemporary homes for California patio living.

Eichler had no background in architecture or construction, but was inspired by living in a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Hiring three teams of top architectural firms – Anshen & Allen, Jones & Emmonds, and Claude Oakland & Associates, he dedicated his business to building homes with quality, design and affordability.

A man of principles and a strong advocate of fair housing, Eichler was the first large tract builder to sell to African-Americans during the height of segregation, according to his son Ned. Although some of  Eichler’s associates urged Joe to cut corners on materials, or make the houses more conventional, he refused.

Eichler homes have won numerous prestigious awards. The innovative designs: open living areas, floor-to-ceiling windows, and central atriums, blend into quiet harmony with nature, and leave a lasting legacy that has not been duplicated.
